From a woman with purple urine to a teetotaller man whose gut microbes brewed their own booze, to an avocado overdose leading to a “broken heart syndrome”, a number of intriguing medical cases made headlines last year.
So-called “case reports,” which describe the conditions of individual patients, don’t carry the same authoritative weight as rigorous scientific studies with thousands of people participating. But such reports can sometimes help doctors better understand rare diseases or spot unusual signs of common conditions.
The speaker will highlight 10 of the strangest case reports picked from New England Journal of Medicine, the no 1 Medical Journal in the world with Impact factor 91.24, the highest in the world.
