She may no longer be a member of the Royal Family but Diana, Princess of Wales, is still being feted as royalty in the United States.

Her reputation undented by her recent divorce from Prince Charles the Princess took breakfast at the White House Tuesday with Hillary Rodham Clinton and a hundred and twenty guests.

It was the first engagement of a day-long fashion-led charity-mission, culminating in Diana’s attendance at a gala fund-raising dinner at the White House Tuesday night.

Sweeping through the White House gates in a limousine, Diana proved she’s still every inch the crowd-puller America has long adored.

Cheered on by well-wishers, Diana arrived for a breakfast hosted by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The fashion-led event was attended by host of America’s top clothes designers but all eyes were on the guest of honour.

Dressed in a business-like navy, pin-striped long jacket and skirt with a single row of pearls and matching earrings, the Princess also wore her famous sapphire and diamond engagement ring given to her by the Prince of Wales.

Sharing a platform with the First Lady, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, American Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour, and Washington Post proprietor Katherine Graham, Diana sat somewhat shyly as Hillary Clinton sang her praises.

SOUNDBITE:
“I want to welcome all of you and particularly our guest of honour, Diana, Princess of Wales. I was thinking as I met her in the Blue Room that this is one of the nicest British invasions that the White House has ever had. The other one as some of you might remember from history burned the place down but now we have the metaphorical equivalent of that excitement here at the White House.”

The event, in aid of breast-cancer, is Diana’s first visit abroad since her divorce from Prince Charles became official and sends a signal to the world at large that she intends to stay in the media spotlight.

The fund-raiser ends Tuesday night with a star-studded gala and celebrity auction with Diana taking centre stage again.
