Why Are Divorce Rates So High in America?

before post

Why are divorce rates so high in America? Some marriages are clearly toxic; divorce in such situations is not only justifiable but may be necessary. That’s why divorce exists (and the only reason why it should exist). But for the man or woman who does not find himself or herself embroiled in violence, substance abuse, severe mental illness, and/or other similar serious problems, divorce is the result of one or more of the following: Too many people mistakenly and unfairly blame their marriages/spouses for personal dissatisfaction; Too many people do not understand the purposes of marriage, so they don’t know what a happy, successful marriage truly is or how it functions; Too many people do not acknowledge the work and sacrifice a successful, happy marriage demands, so they don’t know how to build a happy, successful marriage; and/or Too many people who DO acknowledge the work and sacrifice a successful, happy marriage demands are unwilling to do that work and make those sacrifices for each other and for their family. If you are not in a toxic marriage and (when being honest with yourself) believe you and your spouse want to be and can be happier and stronger together than apart, you must either learn truth about the purposes of marriage, devote yourselves to those purposes, learn to appreciate the work and sacrifice a successful, happy marriage demands, and then do that work and make those sacrifices for life, or you will either live out your days (whether divorce or not) without experiencing the unique and precious blessings marriage and family can bestow.
