Total Recall is a 1990 science fiction film by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The film is based on the short story Memories en gros by American science fiction author Philip K. Dick. The search for reality is considerably more important in the short story. Here, too, it is not the inhabitants of Mars who are saved, but the inhabitants of Earth. The character of Cohaagen and most of the other movie characters do not appear in Dick’s short story.
The original version of the film was even bloodier and more violent, and had to be cut to even gain R-rated release in the United States. That version never appeared, and there are no plans for a release.
The film had a budget of over $65 million. Worldwide, it grossed $261.3 million in theaters. In the U.S. alone, the film grossed $119.4 million.
